Kvantiative eller kvalitative metoder?

Hvorfor:
Det kan være nyttigt at overveje, om den viden du har brug for kan skaffes via kvantitative eller kvalitative metoder - eller eventuelt en kombination af de to.

Hvordan:
Kvanitative metoder er metoder, hvor du indsamler større mængder data. I kvantitative undersøgelser vil du ikke få så stort et indblik i brugernes værdier, følelser og holdninger, men til gengæld får du et datagrundlag som er til at sammenligne med andet. Det giver overblik, men man skal ofte op på over 100 besvarelser, inden man kan trække noget ud af det.

Modsat kvantitative metoder er de kvalitative, hvor man typisk inddrager færre brugere, men tilgengæld får man en dybere indsigt i deres behov. God til at give en indledende brugerforståelse.
Mange af de metoder, der vil være relevante for bibliotekerne, bygger på kvalitative frem for kvantitative data. Ofte det ikke afgørende at det er kvantificerbart. 5-7 brugere vil ofte være repræsentativt for brugerne af et bibliotek.
